Customise the Menu
The Menu is located in the Sidebar. Or, more accurately, the Sidebar is the container for your Menu.
To customise the Menu, start by opening Special pages from the Tools menu.
Scroll down to the heading Lists of pages and select All pages.
The default Namespace for searching is (Main), so open the dropdown and select MediaWiki and click Go.
With a new installation, like this site at this stage, there is nothing there.
If you are new to MediaWiki this empty list of all pages in the MediaWiki namespace is so unhelpful. Things you will want like Common.Css and Vector.Css and the Sidebar and more belong here but don't exist until you search for them.
In the search box type MediaWiki:Sidebar and Enter.
The result is an 'empty' Sidebar:-
If you click Edit you will be confronted by a warning (which we will ignore):-
The structure of a menu is simple:-
- Headings are preceded by a single asterisk *
- Sub-menu items are preceded by two asterisks **
- Menu Headings do not contain links
- Sub-menu items contain the visible wording for the menu item, and the link to that page, separated by | but in reverse order:-
