A Guide to Using MediaWiki in a Hosted Environment

An instructional website by the developer of mh370wiki.net - a MediaWiki site about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

MediaWiki Extensions

Extensions enable MediaWiki to be customised, to include additional features not included in the core installation.

Many extensions are bundled with MediaWiki and located in the /w/extensions directory.

Additional extensions can be downloaded from the MediaWiki website and uploaded to a hosted site using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) utility. The directory accepting the transfer will not be /w/extensions, so use cPanel --> File Manager to copy the files to your website /w/extensions directory.

To enable an extension, follow the instructions on the appropriate MediaWiki page and add lines to LocalSettings.php as per instructions.

If the website fails to load after enabling an extension check that all files were copied, that names are an exact match, and the versions are compatible.

Extensions and the mh370wiki.net website

I have actually kept extensions to a minimum.

The website has been developed over a decade during which MediaWiki has been upgraded many times. With some upgrades I found issues with some extensions and decided to use only those actually distributed with MediaWiki.

The exception is the extension Lingo which provides in-context tooltips from a glossary. The mh370wiki.net website is highly dependent on this extension. Consequently, before any upgrade I test the compatibility of Lingo before implementing the upgrade.

If Lingo ceased to be supported, however, I believe a custom CSS solution could be implemented on this website.

The articles linked below relate to extensions which I actually use. Most of these are also implemented on this website.
