cPanel Terminal
Many tasks related to the installation or upgrade of MediaWiki involve access to a 'command-line'.
In MediaWiki Manuals, when command-line access is required there are usually references to Secure Shell, SSH, a utility called puTTY and other obscure things.
The good news is that for account holders for a hosted website there is a much simpler method.
In cPanel -->Advanced there is an option called Terminal.
The Terminal page has the message 'This interface provides command line access to your account on the server.'
The interface is unfriendly, just like Command Prompt on a Windows desktop.
A big difference, however, is that the commands are different. Windows commands are a legacy from a DOS prompt; Terminal commands are consistent with Linux and Unix.
Default Prompt
Each account holder has an abbreviated account name. This forms part of the prompt. I your name was James Smith you may have an account name jamith, for example.
When opening Terminal, the prompt would be like this:-
[jamith@cpl84 ~]$
$ is the home directory. Type ls and press Enter to get a directory listing.
Type cd followed by a directory name, to change directory
For other commands, see resources linked below.
