A Guide to Using MediaWiki in a Hosted Environment

An instructional website by the developer of mh370wiki.net - a MediaWiki site about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

MediaWiki: Automated Installation

The simplest method for installing MediaWiki in a hosted environment is to use the automated process available from your Hosting Provider.

The most common interface or dashboard is cPanel. A suite of software applications is usually provided by Softaculous which is integrated with cPanel.

To select MediaWiki, log in to cPanel and scroll down to the section for Softaculous Apps Installer.

Select Wikis. My Hosting Provider has three - DocuWiki, MediaWiki, and PmWiki.

Select MediaWiki

As at July 2025 my Hosting Provider does not have the most recent Long Term Support version of MediaWiki available for an automated install. Softaculous has version 1.39, which I will use here for demonstration purposes.

Click on Install leads to two options - a Quick Install, or fill in the details in an on-screen Form.

The Form is preferred because it will configure the variables to be used in LocalSettings.php.
