Networking Terms
- DNS
- Domain Name System (DNS): Resolves a website common name and location (URL) into an IP address
- FTP
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP): A Protocol for Transferring Files (data) between devices, for example a local computer and a remote webserver.
- HTML
- Common programming syntax for web pages
- HTTP
- Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP): A Protocol that enables a browser to request a webpage and the web server to Transfer a HyperText document to the browser.
- HTTPS
- HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS): A secure protocol for transferring webspages on the Internet.
- IP Address
- Unique address assigned to internet-connected devices.
- SEO
- Search engine optimization (SEO): Processes and methods to improve website ranking in search results.
- TCP
- Transmission Control Protocol (TCP): Ensures reliable transmission of data over the Internet. Establishes the connection, checks data is delivered, resends if necessary.
- TCP/IP
- Two protocols which work together, fundamental to data transfer over the Internet. IP ensures data is sent to the correct address; TCP ensures that the data gets there.
- Webmaster
- A person who manages a website.
